‘Moderne’ series Began 2017- current

This series was inspired by paintings I had made post 2014 after a day-trip by boat (out of Adventure Bay) to Tasmania’s 160 million year old jurassic Dolerite Cliffs facing the Great Southern Ocean and Antarctica.

They also reference impressions in my youth of abstract art of the early and mid to later 20th Century.

The love of ceramics as a medium began in early/mid 1970s when after enjoying local pottery classes I enrolled specifically to study Art + Design with a Ceramics major at the then Caulfield Inst of Technology (CIT) now Monash University - three years full time.

A time when a multitude of art practices were exploding into the world of art and Feminism was strong - a vibrant time to be a student. In addition to studio practice and learnings (by a diverse group of highly skilled lecturers) CIT possessed a dynamic Art Department back then with an excellent History of Art focus which brought all the various students of art together.

This group of small works somehow emerged from these experiences and a natural inclination towards expression via simplicity.

Created on the potters wheel using Southern Ice Porcelain (recipe by Les Blakebrough), coloured clay slip brushwork, with a dark matt interior glaze. The exterior was sanded and polished at different stages. High fired in eco-friendly electric kiln.

Elemental VII, 2024

Made this coil-built work in 2019. Was bisque fired and glazed all over with a dark glaze and had been covered and sitting - unfired - on shelves for almost 5 years!

Last week I decided to rub back the dark glaze leaving some behind in the textured surface and I then poured a Matt white over the entire surface. Also glazed the inside first with the white. When the glaze dried I proceeded to rub some of the textured highlights back to the raw clay surface. Placed the work (on its own) in the kiln and fired her up with fingers crossed.

This is the result… Interesting as am creating a series of works using same clay and white glaze. Walker Ceramics White Hand-building EW/SW clay and a Janet de Boos recipe for the white - #137 from her book ‘Glazes for Australian Potters (Copyright 1978 - Edition 1980). The dark glaze I have been making up and using since early 1980s.

Fired in my eco-friendly electric kiln to Cone 10 - meaning 1300°C. ‘Elemental VII’ 2024 - 50cmH.

Shall I endeavour to create the effect again???

Extremely saddened at the sudden passing of deares

Extremely saddened at the sudden passing of dearest Liz Williamson (1949 - 2024).

I knew Liz for many years in capacity as friend, colleague, fellow Craftsperson, in a professional capacity, as an advisor and as a sounding board.

Since her studies at RMIT in the 1970s her love of and enthusiasm for textile art was immense.

Liz was held in highest regard for her professional approach to her roles at ANU + CoFA and her capacity as lecturer in textiles + design was exemplary. I often visited her at coFA - an enthusiastic tour of what was happening always ensued.

The Australian Craft sector was vital to Liz, she held several roles in various organisations advocating for, promoting and supporting Australian Craft, not least regarding her main focus of textile art.

Wangaratta Art Gallery was fortunate to have the involvement of Liz in the biannual Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award from the very beginning in 2009. She was judge and patron for the first year and patron for following award events. She demonstrated support wherever she believed she could for Australian textiles. Liz’ stunning UNSW collaborative exhibition ‘The Eucalypts Project’ of over 100 weavings involved over 60 textile artists from Australia including several from countries bordering the Indian Ocean - it was presented in Wangaratta Art Gallery, February - March this year as part of an extensive tour. Being an experienced educator Liz presented a floor talk + a workshop to support the exhibition + the local community. Wangaratta being a Textile Industry Town holds a large contingent of textile enthusiasts who have demonstrated great support for Liz and her practice. I snapped this image of her when she was talking to the group at WAG - Saturday afternoon 22 March 2024.

There is so much one could say about the beautiful, creative, learned, talented and giving Liz Williamson, she will be sorely missed by so, so many here and abroad.

Sending deepest condolences to family, friends and everyone who knew + worked with Liz.

Blast from the past

Mornington Art Gallery 1979. A small commercial gallery operated adjacent to the Mornington shopping centre.

The lovely woman on left is discussing a porcelain bowl with me (on right), we were looking at aspects of the copper red features created in the reduction firing. It was my first solo exhibition and I was extremely nervous.

I was able to access and use a Catenary Arch kiln belonging to the Mornington Art and Craft Workshop Centre (where I taught ceramics classes back in the day) to fire the works I made for the exhibition. It was owned by the then Mornington Shire Council. Was so very fortunate to be permitted to use the kiln which was a state-of-the-art hand-built example of its type. There was a spacious and beautifully fitted out ceramic studio too.

These days I use an electric kiln in my home studio. I would dearly love a gas kiln again to enable reduction firings which are possible in kilns where one can deliberately reduce the amount of oxygen entering into the kiln during chosen moments/times when firing. This reduction of oxygen creates a carbonised atmosphere inside the kiln. Which in turn alters the glaze composition - the glazes are especially created for such a firing and thus work well in a reduced oxygen atmosphere, or reduction firing.

Copper is usually a green colour when fired in an electric kiln which holds a high oxygen atmosphere. In a reduction firing the copper in the glaze can turn a deep red. Thus Copper Red glaze is born, which may present as part cover or full cover of the vessel - depending…

Elementals 2019 This small group of wheel thrown

Elementals 2019

This small group of wheel thrown dark glazed vessels/forms were made in Wandiligong studio in 1993. They were bisque fired, glazed and fired in Milawa studio in 2019.

The three works titled ’Elementals I II + III’ are made using Walkers No. 5 Stoneware clay. Not sure if still made or available. A beautiful clay. The smooth, yet matt glaze includes carbonates and oxides and is fired in an eco/friendly electric kiln to equivalent of Cone 10 - 1300 C.

These works were exhibited in ‘Elementals’ solo exhibition of ceramics and paintings which was presented by Wangaratta Art Gallery in 2019.

The first image is recent (last Spring) with Viburnum flowers and featuring the smallest of the three vessels.

A diversion from highly colourful works in the series, this work demonstrates a more monochromatic approach and is more energetic and painterly in manner.

Amazing the diversity within a particular approach over years of making one series of works. Every piece unique as handmade and finished individually.

Every batch is different.

Porcelaneous clay wheel thrown form, coloured slip brushwork, interior Matt dark glaze. Fired to 1300 C in oxidation atmosphere in gas fired kiln.

Elemental II - 2019

Three images of ‘Elemental II’ (49cmH) - a favourite work created in 2019 which sold this past week through Craft Victoria. The work is representative of Victoria’s high country’s winter-scapes of snow on rock surfaces.

It is created by hand using Walker Ceramics Stoneware clay (rolled into coils), a Janet DeBoos recipe from her iconic glaze book (#137), and fired in an oxidation atmosphere in a gas kiln to 1300 C - or Cone 10 in pottery speak.

The work was shown initially in 2019 in a solo exhibition titled ‘Elementals’ with other large and smaller ceramic works and paintings - installed in the Wangaratta Art Gallery space in WPAC foyer.

I was highly honoured that it was also selected by Powerhouse Museum curator Eva Czernis-Ryl for entry into the Victorian Ceramic Award held at Manningham Gallery - in 2019 where it was exhibited with a wide range of contemporary ceramics.

A special thank you to Craft Victoria for such wonderful support for the past year (plus), also for the considerable expertise with regard to this recent sale and ongoing representation of my works and works by many artists from within the craft/art sector.

This work has spent a lengthy time at home hanging out on the floor in my living room. It is so loved and is going to a wonderful new home…

An ‘Abstraction’ work, emerged from kiln in the Oct 2023 batch + vintage. All batches are quite different + unique. Which to me is always intriguing. Each individual kiln firing has much to do with the colour and outcome. So do the colours used in mixed clay slips.

Regardless of what one is making, there is always an element of surprise when opening the (a) kiln. Especially in a ceramic/pottery studio situation. Nice + not so nice surprises. We love this aspect of making art + design + functional works out of clay…

This one is made using porcelaneous clay - JB1.
Coloured clay slip brushwork is applied at leather-hard stage. Dark Matt interior glaze applied at bisque ware stage. It is loaded for a second time into the kiln and fired to 1300 C or Cone 10 in the eco-friendly electric kiln.

Love the way this work holds the little natural element 🌱

Made using Southern Ice porcelain clay, Les Blakebrough recipe. Was hand thrown on potters wheel, glazed with white lichen glaze made up in my studio. It is a very tricky glaze 🥹

Fired in eco-friendly electric kiln to 1300 C or Cone 10 to us ceramicists!

More being made atm. Various clays and glazes in coming months.

Love making these small vases. Larger ones now in the making…

This work was amongst stock at @beechworthcontemporaryartspace where art expert, owner+ gallery director Nina Machielse Hunt found a lovely new owner and home for the vase.. 🤍💫

Recent ‘Lichen’ glazed ‘Lip’ vase (2023) photographed @beechworthcontemporaryartspace where expert gallery owner / director Nina Machielse Hunt found this work a happy new owner + home 🤍

The vase was the last glazed version of the previous batch. Am currently producing more and completing a few made last month.

This work was made using Southern Ice porcelain, and a lichen glaze I made up from Linda Bloomfield’s book ‘Special Effect Glazes’ printed by Herbert Press. It was bisque fired, glazed, reloaded into kiln and fired to Cone 10 (1300 C) in my studio eco friendly electric kiln.

Was really thrilled with the combination + this one is definitely a fave!! 🤍💫

Two striking photo’s of ‘Sculpted Vessel’ series work by Beechworth photographer @erindavis.hartwig taken during a photo shoot of several works in 2019.

This current series (2000s) are all hand-thrown on the wheel, using Southern Ice porcelain. Each work is individually hand carved, dried, sanded, fired, sanded again, glazed using @diannemanganstudio made glaze, high fired, and lastly sanded again to finish to a smooth polished surface.

A major installation of works by American artist Donald Judd at Punta della Dogana Art Museum in Venice in 2012.

During my visit back then the building had been recently renovated (2009) by Japanese Architect Tadao Ando as an art specific space. Such an iconic and stunning asset to Venice…

The exhibition included several other artists and was titled ‘In Praise of Doubt’ compiled by curator Caroline Bourgeois.

It included Judd’s works: ‘Stacked’ 1966; stainless steel modules (long + in pic 7. Located in foreground) ‘Untitled’, 1968; another four Stainless Steel modules (4 cubes), ‘Untitled’, 1977; and several wooden multiples - Douglas Fir, ‘Untitled’ 1989, amongst other works by Judd. I thought to share these images of his works as they fitted so amazingly well in the old/new space they were housed within. Perfection …

And, of course I was mesmerised by all Judd’s works and found it difficult to move out of this space to view more artists works…

However, when I finally did, more stunning works by other artists emerged!!
